Side Effects Of Untreated Diabetes

Over 2 million people in the UK alone are thought to have diabetes 2 and be completely unaware of it.

There are perhaps two main issues.

In the first instance, I believe there is a sizable proportion of the population who simply don’t want to bother the doctor if they feel a little “under the weather”. I myself never visited the doctor, and indeed the first time I did, in my forties, the doctor remarked that my file was completely empty. I think it’s because I am too proud to admit an illness had got the better of me, which I have since found to be silly and also dangerous!

That may be a little harsh, but I do think fear plays a key role in keeping some of us from the doctor.

Even if we do go to see the doctor, it’s often only if we feel really ill – and type 2 diabetes can take sometime for us to feel that way.

Given that some of the symptoms are tiredness, slightly impaired vision and stress, it’s easy to put these things down to getting older (not old age as such, just “not being able to do what we used to do”) and pressure at work.

Keeping fit and checking with our doctors every year becomes so important as we age.

To much glucose in the blood supply causes type 2 diabetes. It is due to a resisitance, or lack, of insulin which is the chemical that allows sugar to provide the energy we need to our cells. When our body is not converting these sugars to energy, we get tired and irratable, amongst other things that are not so obvious.

Type 2 diabetes can cause long term damage to the eyes, the central nervous system and our renal function.

As far as renal damage is concerned, in the UK 30% of patients on dialysis have type 2 diabetes. This can be prevented by close monitoring of the blood sugar levels in the type 2 patient, as well as getting the levels of bad cholesterol down.

A yearly eye check is very important to check for damage to the optic nerve, and diabetic sufferes have a much higher incidence of cataracts and glaucoma.

Neuropathy, (nerve disease), affects about 60% of those with diabetes. This usually affects the feet and can lead to amputation. Neuropathy affects both type 1 and 2 sufferers and usually occurs after about ten years of high sugar levels. When these levels are reduced through treatment, the condition improves and often goes away completely.

So don’t let pride get in your way when it comes to the doctor. Try and get a yearly medical check up, and don’t put feelings of tiredness down to old age.

The Atkins Grapefruit Diet.

The Atkins Grapefruit diet is a diet plan, not supported by the estate of Dr. Atkins, that hopes to play on the popularity of the grapefruit diet and the Atkins diet name. However, a closer look into this diet shows that it may not be all it claims to be.

First off, it’s very difficult to find information on the Atkins grapefruit diet plan. Clever people know that when someone is carrying out a deception, or a con, they will often gloss over the facts. This is what the Atkins grapefruit diet seems to do in an attempt to get people to associate it with two supposedly effective diets.

Is the Atkins Grapefruit Diet part of the Atkins Diet or support by the late Dr. Atkins’ company? The answer is a resounding no, not only is there no mention of the Atkins Grapefruit Diet on the Atkins web site, but there is no fruit of any kind allowed in the list of allowed foods in the Atkins diet Induction phase either.

The induction phase allows the following foods: fish of all kinds, all fowl such as turkey and chicken, any shellfish, any meat such as beef or pork, eggs cooked in any style including fried, cheese, vegetables, herbs and spices, fats and oils, low carbohydrate beverages including diet soft drinks.

Please, notice one thing – that fruit does not feature on that list at all! Yes, later phases of the Atkins diet do allow small amounts of fruits such as cantaloupe and strawberries, and the pre-maintenance and maintenance phases do even allow small quantities of grapefruit, but when judged in comparison with the amount of Grapefruit advised on the Atkins Grapefruit Diet there is a massive difference.

The Atkins Grapefruit Diet recommends a cup of grapefruit juice or a cup of grapefruit sections, with 8 and 18 carbs respectively. Even the most generous phases of the Atkins diet recommends limiting consumption to below 8 carbs per day, when it comes to grapefruit. That’s a direct contradiction from one plan to the other.

Most reasonable people would look directly at the Atkins website the moment they heard of the Atkins Grapefruit Diet. When they found no mention of that diet on their site, a red light would go off and an alarmbell would ring.

In general, please remember this: any plan that relies too heavily on one type of food, such as grapefruit in a grapefruit diet, is not healthy for any but very short periods. The Atkins Grapefruit Diet is not associated with the Atkins diet, and could interfere with the results of the Atkins diet, especially in its early phases.

For some sports personalities who are diabetic, there are quite a bit of these sugar substitutes that you can use.  Weight loss programs also invoke using these methods in order to lsoe some excess fats. Some sports individuals are diabetic and they need to control their sugar level. Maintaining a good and normal sugar level is kind of hard if you do not have the discipline. So you need to have that discipline in order to have a controlled or normal sugar level to avoid any illness or diseases brought by diabetes. Diabetes is prevalent amongst sports personalities. Saccharin
Saccharin was originally isolated from grapes and is reported to be over 100 times sweeter than sugar so a tiny amount goes a very long way. Its use is limited however. It does not add the other chemical actions like regular sugar does so it cannot be used in baking. It also has a strong aftertaste so it is difficult to use as a sweetener for drinks.
Most drinks nowadays are being injected or mixed with many supplements and enhancements especially for athletes and sports personalities.
Aspartame
This is one of the most frequently used substitutes. Aspartame is another artificial sweetener which is super sweet, again it is claimed to be 100 times sweeter than sugar. It too is not suitable for baking because when it is heated it loses its sweetness. Aspartame is popular as a sweetener for beverages.
Honey
Honey is a sugar substitute but not an artificial one. It can however be used as a substitute in certain kinds of cooking and can be used to sweeten beverages if one can become accustomed to the taste which differs greatly from sugar. Honey does have more calories and carbohydrates than sugar however so be aware of that fact if you use it as a sugar substitute.
Whatever you use, you may need to consult your doctor or health professional for better usage of these sugar substitutes as I am not a medical professional. But I just listed and make them available as far as I know. As we all know there are many sports personalities are suffering from diabetes and they need to get them in check. You cannot over emphasized the importance of weight loss in this case.
It is so amazing that so many people get into the trap of supplements and enhanced their sports abilities which otherwise could not be there for them.
