A Pub In The United Kingdom Has Beaten The Smoking Ban

Thursday, June 10th, 2010

Pubs, bars and clubs, not just around the country, but around the world, have taken a huge hit in sales and a decline in custom due to the smoking ban that has been rolled out by various world governments. In the United Kingdom the smoking ban came into use in July of 2007, and since then there have been sharp changes to the way pubs, bars and clubs must treat smokers.

At first there were a lot of weird and wonderful ideas to try and cheat the smoking ban, most were met with a heavy hand from the government, as lots of angry complaints were made by new found publicans who now enjoy the smoke-free environment. There were landlords trying to turn their pubs into official ‘testing’ areas for tobacco, rather than drinking establishments. This meant that they were able to sell alcohol in one area of the pub, and allow smoking in another area of the pub, so long as they got a signature from the smoker. The medical facility ploy caught on in a few different pubs, bars and clubs around the country, but did not last long before it was shut down by the local councils.

A landlord from Sutton Coldfield, which is just outside Birmingham in the United Kingdom has managed to get around the smoking ban entirely, and isn’t met with any opposition from local councils or the other no-smoking publicans that not frequent his now very popular pub. Chris Giles, the landlord in question, has begun selling electronic cigarettes. The electronic cigarette is a small device that looks very similar to a real cigarette. The device works by converting a small amount of nicotine into a vapor by mixing it with some water in what is called an atomizer. The electronic cigarette device then delivers the vapor into the users mouth for them to inhale. Unlike traditional cigarettes the electronic cigarette does not contain damaging substances like carbon monoxide or tar, making it a much more healthy alternative.

With the electronic cigarette satisfying the cravings of the users by giving the all important nicotine hit, aswell as satisfying the not so obvious cravings, like the feeling of a cigarette in the persons hand, it’s easy to see why they have taken off so well. The electronic cigarette’s end also lights up when the user takes a pull on it, this adds confidence to the user as it gives more weight to the illusion of real smoking, making the user feel more comfortable using it in a public place.

Mr Giles of the Butler Arms in Birmingham, UK has really capitalized on the electronic cigarette. The Butlers Arms started selling the electronic cigarettes on one weekend after seeing them in a trade magazine. Mr Giles was astounded that every pub hadn’t bought them in all ready.

Mr Giles said: “When it’s freezing outside and chucking it down with rain it’s a good alternative to going outside for a cigarette

“We built a smoking shelter, but it’s just not the same for smokers who have been marginalised by the ban.

“While we are completely supportive of the smoking ban we are still very conscious of the needs of our smoking customers.

“We are in autumn now and winter is not very far away, so these e-cigs have come at the right time.”

Not only is the pub selling the e-cigs regularly to publicans in the pub, but they’re getting regular calls throughout the day asking whether they are stocking cartridges for the devices. It is believed that the devices are so popular because not only are they much healthier, but they also hold much more value for money. The average packet of cigarettes in the UK (at time of writing) is around 7 for 20. The equivalent of this as an electronic cigarette cartridge is around 0.40. You can see how the savings would soon mount up over a period of time with a 280% saving on every packet bought.

Users can choose from different strength and flavoured cartridges. The cartridges come in varied strengths from no nicotine, low, medium up to high nicotine. Users can also get various flavours including tobacco (various brands), strawberry, mint, menthol and cherry.

Smart Smoker USA are a retailer for the electronic cigarette in the US. Find out about more about electronic cigarettes at their website.

Breast Cancer- Basic Symptoms You Need To Be Aware

Saturday, March 27th, 2010

Breast cancer is very serious as one in eight women will be diagnosed with this disease during their lifetime. It is a good bet that you or someone very close to you is struggling or has struggled with breast cancer. There are two main types of cancer cancer. There is Ductal Carcinoma and Lobular Carcinoma. Ductal Carcinoma will start in the ducts that are created to move milk between the breast and the nipple. This is the most common type of breast problems.

Research has shown that currently the two most prevalent chest cancers are Ductal Carcinoma and Lobular Carcinoma. Of these two, Ductal Carcinoma ranks as the most prevalent type of breast cancer. In some cases, this problem can start in a different section of ones breast, but again this is pretty rare.

Lobular Carcinoma starts in the lobules. There are rare cases where this problem has started in a different area of the breast but this is extremely uncommon. The best key to survival is early detection. This will help you get this evil disease into remission and hopefully never return. Early detection leads to the best and highest chance of survival. Women should always do self breast examinations and should schedule yearly mammograms once you reach thirty five years of age.

Stage Two is around ninety two percent. Stage Three is sixty seven percent and Stage Four is around twenty percent. Monthly self breast exams and yearly mammograms are two of the best ways to detect cancer very early. The stressing of monthly self breast exams can not be given enough.

Unfortunately, it is believed that women with HER2 positive chest cancer usually have more aggressive types of breast cancer and the chance for the cancer to recur is much higher than the average type. If you or a loved one has this problem these symptoms may occur. Unfortunately, the very early stages of the problem do not cause symptoms one can see.

As it is growing, one may notice the following: Your nipple may change in size, feel or shape, you may encounter redness or even puckering or dimpling (this could resemble the skin of an orange), you may feel a lump in your armpit or in your breast that is very hard to the touch and does not feel smooth. At this point there may be little or no pain and you may see pus leaking from the nipple

As the cancer progresses along in stages one may feel: Pain in your bones, discomfort in your breasts, the arm nearest the breast that has cancer may become swollen, you may develop skin ulcers and you may begin to lose weight without trying to. The good news is there have been lots of recent developments and treatments in chest cancer. Depending on the stage the chest cancer is in this may include: Chemotherapy, radiation, surgery, a combination of all three, hormonal or Targeted therapy may also be used.

Continue to do monthly self exams if you are over the age of 20 and yearly mammograms over the age of thirty five. If there is a history of this problem in your family you may want to consult your doctor about early testing.

Mesothelioma Treatment Options – Which One Suits You Perfectly?

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

Mesothelioma patients require urgent medical attention from a specialist. As this cancer is comparatively rare, only specialized cancer centers would have the requisite experience and know how to counter it. A wide range of mesothelioma treatment options is available, but doctors decide the most suited line of action after considering the spread of the cancer, the area affected by it, the age and health of the patient. In most cases, detection takes place only at an advanced stage and therefore, chances of survival becomes difficult.

Wide range of treatment methods are used by medical professionals. The commonly followed one is removing tumor through surgery. There are basically eight surgery options available. The palliative surgery reduces the pain; the supportive surgery assists other mesothelioma treatment options like immunotherapy; debulking surgery diminishes the cancerous growth; reconstructive surgery restores the function and appearance of infected organs; staging surgery identifies the stage of cancer, diagnostic surgery determines the type of mesothelioma; preventive surgery removes suspected cancerous tissues and curative surgery eradicates small tumors.

A combination of drugs is used in chemotherapy to destroy the malicious cells and it is the most effective cancer treatment these days. Sometimes drugs are administered intravenously and passed through the blood stream. At times they are injected directly at the most infected areas. Physicians generally use four types of chemotherapy. The symptoms of Mesothelioma are treated using palliative chemotherapy; prevention of cancer reappearance is done by adjuvant chemotherapy and shrinking of cancer before surgery is achieved by neoadjuvant or preoperative chemotherapy. Combined modality chemotherapy is used along with surgery, radiotherapy or other treatment options.

Radiation therapy involves using x-rays, gamma rays, particle rays or proton beams to kill the malignant cells. Most often, radiotherapy is used in combination with surgery and chemotherapy. Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy, which is a recent breakthrough achievement, tries to administer only the appropriate doses of radiation precisely on the cancerous mass.

Many other modern techniques are used as mesothelioma treatment options, where the success rates have found to be varying. Examples of such therapies are photodynamic therapy, gene therapy, biological therapy, multimodality therapy etc. Success of the treatment depends on the response of the patient towards the treatment process.
