You want to shed excess pounds and you want it to happen fast. You are not alone. This is why many people fall victim to popular crash diets. But losing weight should never be placed above your health. When on a weight loss program, you need to be sure to eat from all major groups of food as set forth by the USDA food pyramid. This is not a task to neglect because in order for your metabolism to work correctly, you need enough calories to fuel it.

Goals Are Important

Any weight loss program that wants you to record your goals for losing weight is usually a good one to try. Many studies have resulted in findings showing that by setting goals and writing those goals down, a person is more likely to not deter from their diet and subsequently, meet their goals. The best way to go about this is to setting weekly goals that lead up to larger goals. For example, lose two pounds a week until you have lost 20 pounds in three months. This helps you stay motivated while on your weight loss program.

Calorie Amounts

All people need calories to function and live and any weight loss program will ask you to reduce them. But a healthy weight loss program will not require you to reduce your calories in a drastic manner because doing this may actually hinder weight loss instead of promote it. A good rule to go by is to limit your calorie reduction to 1,600 as a man and 1,200 as a woman. Remember, there are serious health risks involved in dramatically reducing calories.

Exercise Routines

It is common knowledge that exercising boosts weight loss. Keep in mind 3,500 calories equals to one pound of body weight. So in order to take off one pound, you need to eliminate 3,500 calories. There are really only two ways to accomplish this–exercising, which raises the metabolism, and calorie reduction. However, a good weight loss program will combine exercise with eating healthy in order to lose the most amount of weight possible in the least amount of time. Be careful not to exercise excessively in order to prevent exhaustion and dehydration.

Keep in Mind

Your overall health should always come before your weight in a weight loss program. If you find a program that states you can lose a lot of weight in a little time, stay way; this is a routine ploy used to make money off the desperation of others. Remember, any weight loss program that is healthy should not force you to stop eating foods from key food groups.

The body runs in the same manner as any machine. They both need fuel; however, the body gets its fuel from calories and those calories come from healthy foods. The right weight loss program for you will require plenty of hard work, making plausible goals, exercising in a healthy way, and sticking to the food pyramid.
